GET YOUR SEXY ON by Kimberly Kaye Terry

October 31, 2011 in alpha male, B Reviews, Book Reviews, bwwm, Kensington Aphrodisia

Description: After one night of all-consuming passion, Sin, ends up running away from private investigator, Mac, and her life as a stripper. A year later, he stumbles upon her in her new life as a teacher and their passion for each other explodes again, but will their relationship be able to overcome all the drama from Sin’s past?

The Good: Mind-blowing sex, a complicated back story, and well-plotted suspense makes this novel a serious page turner. Also, one of Mac’s old military associates is not only super-sexy, but also set up well for a book of his own.

The Bad: The character of Sin’s brother is a catalyst but never fully developed. Some readers might find Mac’s extreme alpha male behavior offensive (I didn’t, but I’m just putting it out there). Also, Kensington has not priced the e-book well: despite being over three years old, it’s $8.32.

The Naughty: Agressive sex, rough talk, and anal.

Editing issues: None

Publisher: Kensington Aphrodisia

Length: 304 pages

Final Grade: B

FRIENDS by Thayer King

October 28, 2011 in Book Reviews, bwwm, C Reviews, Sugar and Spice Press

Description: Kayla wakes up after a night of hot sex with her best friend, Joshua. A whole lot of drama ensues.

The Good: Kayla and Joshua not only have hot sex, they seem very well-suited for each other. Also, Joshua’s brother is very intriguing and well set-up for his own book. And I loved that the two main characters had founded a design firm together.

The Bad: The tone of the book is a bit judgmental. For example, whenever one of Joshua’s exes show up at the office, his staff jokingly calls it a Code W. The “W” stands for Whore. And this is just one example of slut-shaming that doesn’t feel like it should have any place in an erotic romance. There’s also a twist with an ex-girlfriend that just isn’t well-executed.

The Naughty: Unprotected sex, Virgin, Erotic.

Editing issues: None that I’m remembering.

ADRIENNE by D. Renee Bagby

October 27, 2011 in Book Reviews, bwam, C Reviews, paranormal

Description: After being saved from an attack by a mysterious stranger, Adrienne wakes up on an alternate Earth called Bron. She soon discovers that she is the soul mate of a young Asian king named Malik and that she’s basically been bridenapped. Cue the conflict.

The Good: Lots and lots of story, interesting world-building, and a well set-up mystery.

The Bad: Unfortunately though this story has lots of potential, it’s populated by two rather unpleasant people. Adrienne is generally cranky, she lacks curiosity, and at times, she’s incredibly rude to her servants. Malik himself is entitled, spoiled, and physically abusive to his servants and subjects. It’s hard to cheer for a happy ending for the fantasy equivalent of Cleopatra and Mark Anthony, and it’s a credit to Bagby’s storytelling skills that I was even able to finish this book.

The Naughty: A couple of sex scenes. Steamy.

Editing issues: Imprecise language and dialogue, and minor grammar errors (8 by my count).

Publisher: Samhain

Length: Novel

Final Grade: C-

LOVE UNSPOKEN by Delilah Hunt

October 26, 2011 in B Reviews, Book Reviews, bwwm

Description: When reformed bad girl, Noelle Williams, lays eyes on tall, mute cowboy, Cole McKinney, it’s passion at first sight. Can they overcome their respective baggage and find love in each other’s arms?

The Good: I don’t know what it is about a man who literally cannot talk, but Cole McKinney is HOT, HOT, HOT! You’ll be cheering for this damaged couple by a few chapters in. Also loved that the heroine is super-flawed in a complicated but non-angry-black-woman sort of way.

The Bad: The cover is a stock photo, and this book deserved better. Also, while the sex is steaming hot, the physical descriptions tended toward the anatomical. For example, at one point we get a full description of Cole’s cock, complete with veins and color, which can take you out of the story — especially when you’re waiting for the sexing to start.

The Naughty: Rough sex, lots of BJ.

Editing issues: Minor — I counted 9 grammatical mistakes.

Publisher: Evernight Publishing

Length: 208 pages

Final Grade: B+

CANDY GIRL by Eve Vaughn

October 25, 2011 in Book Reviews, bwwm, C Reviews, Novella

Description: Overly nice girl, Julie Bennett discovers that Gabriel Carland, her cold boss, actually runs hot for her.

The Good: It’s always fun to see a pushover finally stand up for herself. And the sex is both playful and hot. Nice girls do!

The Bad: The story feels a bit rushed, especially when it comes to the emotional arc. After the initial seduction, Gabriel Carland isn’t given much to do or any further personal development.

The Naughty: Anal, explicit sex, graphic language, toys.

Editing issues: No

Publisher: Loose Id

Length: Novella

Final Grade: C

CALEB’S WOMAN by Eve Vaughn

October 24, 2011 in alpha male, B Reviews, Book Reviews, bwwm, paranormal, werewolf

Description:

Sommer McGregor the adopted daughter of werewolves decides to open a catering business and take on a lover. Her best friend and Alpha-in-Waiting, Caleb Masters, is more than willing to help her with that challenge.

The Good: Sommer needs saving, relationship and career-wise, but she resists Caleb’s help. This makes for a surprisingly relatable emotional story. Caleb is a great Alpha. He knows what he wants, and goes after Sommer hard. I also love that they were friends first, passionate lovers second. And their meddlesome family members are both funny and lovable.

The Bad: Caleb’s tail pops out when he’s turned on, which comes off more weird than sexy. And there’s a marking of mate that never really pays off.

The Naughty: Erotic Content, Anal, and forced seduction.

Editing issues: No
