Books I Recently Downloaded After Reading the Samples (June 2012)

May 31, 2012 in ebook talk

I’m not saying that I’m enjoying taking a few days off from not doing anything but writing in my spare time, I’ll just say that these are the samples I read and either enjoyed or was intrigued enough to download in full. I’m going to try to make this a regular feature, but no guarantees. Also, if you’ve read and enjoyed any of these books, let me know, and I’ll push them higher up the list. Meanwhile, look forward to an onslaught of reviews, starting next Monday.

In no particular order:

1. SLIGHTLY SINFUL by Yvette Hines. Intriguing situation, and I really enjoyed Ms. Hines secretary-boss romance, A PIECE OF ME.

2. LAWKED FLAME by Erosa Knowles. If I finish reading this, it will be my first Erosa Knowles novel. But like I’ve said before, I love when authors who are known for writing one kind of thing (in this case contemporary romance), try their hand at writing another kind of thing.

3. HOW CAN YOU MEND A BROKEN HEART by Asha King. This seemed like a cute read, and it features a young couple. Occasionally, I like to throw in gummy bears with my salt. Smile.

4. LIVING VIOLET by Jaime Reed. Another young couple, but I find it appalling how little diversity there is in YA, so I was really happy to see this paranormal. Also, the sample pages were solidly written.

5. RESCUE ME by Shara Azod. I love Germans, and you never get to see them as heroes. Also, this couple is so opposite, I wanted to keep reading just to see how it would all work out.

6. TAKEN BY THE NYMPH by Lizzie Lynn Lee. I love the idea of a nymph king trolling bars for an earthly bride. Also, like the hero, I’m a bit of an alcohol snob myself. And, the sample pages were really funny.

7. SHERRY’S WOLF by Maddy Barone. I love “different,” and this is certainly that. It’s set in a post-apocalyptic future where a group of time-travelling current-day women are forced to depend on a group of Native American shifters — who also want them for mates.

8. HAVEN: RULES OF MATING by Nia K. Foxx. I tend to love IR set in small towns. And this is about a recently transferred big-city wolf sheriff in lust/possibly love with a feline doctor who can’t shift.

9. THE RANCHER’S ULTIMATUM by Nia K. Foxx. I had never read this author before going on my downloading spree and she got me to go all in on two samples. Good job! Also, I think my tastes — which can run toward the Harlequinesque — makes be automatically want to download any title that features the word “ultimatum.”

10. TAMING THE SCOTSMAN by Sienna Mynx. I’m a sucker for an IR romance set abroad, and this one had me at private train from Edinburgh to Aberdeen. Now that’s a setting you don’t see often!

11. HARMONY by Sienna Mynx. A historical romance set during prohibition times? Sold! And the sample was fantastic. Of all the books on this list, I’m looking most forward to reading this one.

12. TATTED by Renee LaRuse. A police officer and a former career criminal fall in love? Wha??? Now this was something I definitely had to get into!

Let me know your thoughts on the list or about stuff you’ve recently sampled and downloaded in full.

“I’m Glad You Came” – the Songs Behind the Book

May 23, 2012 in bwwm, bwwm romance, Her Russian Billionaire, Her Viking Wolf, historical, Owner of His Heart, paranormal, Wild One (The)

Is that a wolf in your pocket or are you just happy to see me? Seriously though, here’s the still-being-tweaked cover for my next book in the 50 Loving State series, HER VIKING WOLF, which is set in Colorado and will release next week on Amazon. So keep your eyes on this site for more details, which will be coming soon.

Meanwhile, I thought it might be fun to do a post about the soundtrack songs for my books. For every book I’ve written so far, I’ve chosen a Top 40 song that, if I had the wherewithal and the desire to use it for a book trailer, I totally would.

For THE OWNER OF HIS HEART it was “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele:

For HER RUSSIAN BILLIONAIRE it was “We Found Love (In a Hopeless Place)” by Rihanna ft. Calvin Harris

For HER VIKING WOLF it was “Glad You Came” by The Wanted

And for my next novel, THE WILD ONE (aka the Andrew Sinclair book), it’s — gasp — “Wild Ones” by Flo Rida ft. Sia

Wow, that was the first time I saw most of those videos, having mostly listened to them on radio. And I now realize that they really don’t match my books. Just goes to show you how much music can inspire you when you’re able to form your own mind pictures.

But what songs are you just loving right now? I am enjoying the latest Santigold album on repeat, since seeing the music video for its lead song, “Disparate Youth” on Violet William’s author site. But I’m always looking for new music to commute to, so let me have your suggestions.

STRANDED by Pepper Pace

May 16, 2012 in A Reviews, black woman white man, Book Reviews, bwwm, bwwm romance, pregnant, self-published, steamy

Description: When Oceans Delano, a shy Jamaican woman and Marshall Cohen, a privileged-but-somewhat-shady white businessman are stranded on an island together, they must fight to survive and to navigate their growing love for one another.

The Good: This is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time, and therefore my “loved” list is rather long. LOVED: all the details about survival — it felt really real, the cultural touches from the heroine’s Jamaican background, the slow burn toward sex — and that it delivered on its promise, the gritty situations, the high-stakes sex, and the realistic conflict. The stakes were high and the story was told in such a way that I truly did not know what would happen next. Pepper Pace is a very special writer and a credit to the IR genre. When people talk about really good books that would have gotten rejected by a Big Six publishing house, because they wouldn’t have known what to do with it, they’re talking about books like STRANDED.

The Bad: The plot was crack-a-lacking. The characters were on point. But unfortunately this story suffers from lots of typos and some really serious abuse of exclamation marks and CAPS. These take you out of the story and keep it from making it into A+ territory.

The Naughty: Steamy. Very gritty sex. Truly difficult situations surrounding sex.

Editing issues: Lots of typos.

Publisher: Indie

Length: 146 pages (Amazon estimated length)

Final Grade: A-

ACTING WITCHY by Thayer King

May 9, 2012 in alpha male, B Reviews, bi-racial heroine, black woman white man, Book Reviews, bwwm romance, erotic, Evernight Publishing, paranormal, witch

Description: When actress Mystique Gray meets writer/director/producer/actor/super-possessive alpha male Sean Savage, their chemistry is undeniable, but Mystique has some serious reservations — mainly surrounding the fact that he’s a witch!

The Good: Well, as always with Ms. King, the sex is super-hot. Seriously, she should write a how-to manual on this, because she does it really well. Also, this is a surprisingly full story for it’s length. Well worth the $4.99, you’ll feel like you’ve “read a book.” There’s also a very nice set-up for the hero’s brother, who is super-intriguing and really needs to have a book of his own.

The Bad: While the plot is really tight, the heroine’s motivations aren’t made clear until rather late in the book — which gives us plenty of time to get roiling mad at her and wonder why she’s being so resistant. The character’s motivation needed to be revealed much, much earlier, so that we could all be on the same page with — as opposed to mad at — her. But if anyone is reading this who’s on the verge of putting the book down, let me assure you, she has what turns out to be sound and fascinating reasons for resisting this relationship at every turn.

The Naughty: Erotic. Huge build up and tension. Explicit language.

Editing issues: No typos found. Weird dialogue formatting on Kindle app.

Publisher: Evernight Publishing

Length: 34K+ words

Final Grade: B+

AFTERBURN by Sonia Hightower

May 2, 2012 in B Reviews, Breathless Press, sensual, white woman black man

Description: When Crystal, a white Air Force mechanic falls for Grant, a black pilot and officer, will their love fly or will real-world circumstances ground them?

The Good: I loved the heroine, even more so because she was dealing with an extremely hostile work environment. The author also did a good job with a secondary character, who could have just been used as a dumb foil, but ended up having layers. The obstacles Crystal faced as an Air Force mechanic in an interracial relationship felt very realistic, and made for a compelling read. When I wasn’t getting angry on her behalf, I found myself really rooting for her.

The Bad: There are a couple of big craft problems, starting with the prologue, which really isn’t needed and doesn’t add to the story, especially since the hero’s POV was somewhat under-developed. The heroine has such a strong character and situation that one might argue the book should have been exclusively written from her point-of-view. Also, the author goes through a lot of trouble to establish how easy it is for this couple to be honest with each other, only to have one of them lie for a rather shaky reason, which made the main love conflict feel forced.

The Naughty: Sensual. Hotel room sex.

Editing issues: No typos found. 2 instances of head-hopping.

Publisher: Breathless Press

Length: 25,000+

Final Grade: B
