AT LAST by Billy London

July 30, 2012 in A Reviews, Beautiful Trouble Publishing, black woman white man, Book Reviews, bwwm, bwwm romance, erotic

Description: Courtney has been nursing a low-grade crush on her long time mate, Chris, who is away, teaching English in South Africa — so imagine her surprise when she starts receiving emails from Chris’s housemate, Ryan. Can Courtney and Ryan bring their online romance into the real world?

The Good: This is a sweet but seriously sexy story, featuring a very cute, young couple, who make each other laugh. They had terrific banter, and again the sex was very, very hot. I loved that the two characters really felt like young people. They have young people flaws, get in young people scrapes, and generally do the things that young people do. The story felt culturally authentic and age appropriate.

The Bad: Lots of references to Brit pop culture and lots of British slang, which might confuse or annoy some American readers. I actually loved it and thought it really added international color to the overall story and setting. Also, the few jokes I got were really funny.

The Naughty: Erotic. Hot phone sex. Virgin. Explicit language.

Editing issues: 1 typo found.

Publisher: Beautiful Trouble Publishing

Length: 131 pages

BRIAR’S CHAMPION by Mahalia Levey

July 25, 2012 in black woman hispanic man, Book Reviews, business man, bwlm, steamy

Description: When Briar’s famous boyfriend, not only marries someone else, but also kicks her out of the home they shared together, she thinks she’s done with love for good — that is, until Sloan Gutiérrez walks into her life.

The Good: I love a concept that involves a heroine forgetting one man by getting under another. Also, it’s been a while since I’ve seen a hero who just prefers to date black women.

The Bad: A great set-up is squandered by rushed and clumsy execution. The love story especially lacks craft: the initial attraction between Briar and Sloan is based purely on each thinking the other is really hot, and then they end up committing super fast for unconvincing reasons. Briar’s personality morphs from plot point to plot point, which makes for a really uneven and inconsistent main character. And there’s an unneeded plot point tacked on to end of the story. Other craft issues: stilted dialogue, long speeches, unnecessary interior thought.

The Naughty: Steamy. Sex at first meet. Explicit language.

Editing issues: 2 typos. Missing commas. Word misusage.

Publisher: Secret Cravings Publishing

Length: 49 pages

Final Grade: C

SEDUCED BY THE WOLF by Zena Wynn

July 24, 2012 in A Reviews, alpha male, black woman white man, Book Reviews, bwwm, bwwm romance, paranormal, Phaze Books, shifter(s), werewolf

Description: Von Washington has a secret: she has never stopped being pen pals with Master Sergeant Sean Jacobson, the former army buddy of her controlling fiancé. But when Sean comes to town several secrets will be revealed, including that he’s a werewolf!

The Good: This is great read with exceptional storytelling, gasp-out-loud twists and turns, and hot, hot, HOT sex. I loved how the author dealt with Sean’s ongoing struggles to control his wolf. And Von’s cousin is awesome. She made me want to call up my favorite cousin for a long overdue chat.

The Bad: The epilogue feels tacked on and rushed.

The Naughty: Erotic. Women struggling with sexuality. Sexual situations depicted with two different men.

Editing issues: 7 typos found. “Misfortunate” is barely a word and not recognized by most dictionaries. I wish IR authors would stop using it.”Unfortunate” is always the better choice.

Publisher: Phaze Books

Length: 128 pages

THE HICK AND THE HIPPIE by Sherrod Story

July 23, 2012 in A Reviews, alpha male, athlete, BDSM, black woman white man, Book Reviews, business man, bwwm, bwwm romance, erotic, self-published

Description: When outspoken Chicago girl, Lee Morris, gets sent down south to “do time” (once again getting in trouble for her activist ways), the last thing she expects is to become the willing submissive of Xander Crete, a hick, football player.

The Good: This book is H!O!T! from the beginning and really compelling. I couldn’t read it fast enough. The situation was fascinating, and I loved that the author actually deals with the emotional fallout of a young, budding dom/sub relationship. Lee really struggles with her desires, and you can’t blame her for doing so. The author seems very interested in the psychology of the situation, and the result is a really well-drawn heroine, who is likable without being run-of-the-mill.  Check out this line: “Lee liked being smart. She thought it was fun to work things out.”

THE HICK AND THE HIPPIE turned me into a total fan girl for Sherrod Story. This author has a ton of raw talent, and the potential to get even better with age. At a price point of $2.99, this story is well worth the chance, so please give one, and leave a review if you love it as much as I did.

The Bad: The story mostly revolves around Lee’s and Xander’s relationship in high school, and while that is strongly written, their grown up relationship gets short shrift in comparison. The structure of the novel could be much tighter, and the transitions between past and present are pretty clumsy. If you don’t like controlling alpha males, you’ll want to leave this book alone. Also, Ms. Story employs an omniscient voice that might irk readers who can’t abide head hopping. But now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, let me restate how highly I’m recommending this book. Overall, one gets the sense that this is an author who is doing her very best and will do even better next time.

The Naughty: Erotic. Sex in public. Sex in cars. Spanking. Light BDSM.

Editing issues: 3 typos. Weird indents on Kindle Fire.

Publisher: Indie

Length: 168 pages

Final Grade: A-

Books I Recently Downloaded After Reading the Sample (July 2012)

July 18, 2012 in Books I Recently Downloaded After Reading the Sample, ebook talk

So the last “Books I Recently Downloaded After Reading the Sample” post went so well, that I figured I’d do it again. Plus, real talk: It really does help me keep my reading organized. I don’t want to say I have a problem with keeping my digital bookshelves organized , but I do often find unread samples and sometimes entire books that got lost in the shuffle. Having these posts to refer to helps me keep it all sorted.

I’ve done reports on most of the books from last time — including SNATCHED by Sharon Cullars, which I downloaded without needing a sample — her writing is just that awesome. But here are the few I didn’t finish. Please let me know if I’m really missing out:

1. LAWKED FLAME by Erosa Knowles. Though I more than loved the premise, the storytelling itself became way too convoluted, and soon I was irretrievably confused. However, certain scenes from the book have really stayed with me, and I’m leaning toward picking it up again if just to see how it all turns out. This might be one I need to read slowly.

2. LIVING VIOLET by Jamie Reed. I so wanted to love this, but this novel rambles and rambles, plodding along at a glacial place. It’s strange, because teenagers are often accused of having no attention span, but I didn’t feel I had enough of one to get through this book.

Now for the stuff I recently downloaded in no particular order. Feel free to weigh in with your opinions in the comments.

1. BRIAR’S CHAMPION by Mahalia Levey. I love a story that begins with a heroine getting dumped. Comeback stories are the best. Also, I really enjoy the author “hotspot” interviews Ms. Levey does on IRMC.

2. THE DOCTOR’S SECRET BRIDE by Ana E. Ross. Hot nanny, hot employer, close quarters with a mystery brewing in the background? Sign me up!

3. THE HICK & THE HIPPIE by Sherrod Story. This author pretty much had me at the title, but the opening is also smoking hot. A story about an outspoken activist who falls for the town’s football star? Yes, please!

4. AT LAST by Billy London. I’ve gotten several notes from readers recommending this author, and I do have a soft spot for epistolary openings, so I decided o give this one a chance.

5. AFTER THE KISS by Violet Williams. I’m really looking forward to reading this. The scenario, of a black girl caught up in a relationship with an unstable mafia scion, is very high stakes. I was sad when the sample ended, because I very much wanted to see what would happen next.

6. HOT FOR TEACHER by Roslyn Hardy Holcomb. A heroine who doesn’t want to be in committed relationship? Now that’s different! Also I have a thing for hair rock, so the title and the way it was designed really appealed to me.

7. THE NAUGHTY SINS OF A SAINT by Tiana Laveen. The sample has a ton of craft problems, and I really don’t agree with many of the hero’s opinions, but the story did manage to hold me rapt for the length of the sample. This is one of those novels that is so crazy, it just might work. Either that or completely fall apart. We’ll see.

8. THE BROKEN H by J.L. Langley. Yeah, I’m pretty much a sucker for any m/m set on a ranch.

9. TRANSGENDER HELL by Downy Davis.  A transgender woman waits til her wedding night to tell her husband she used to be a guy? No, she didn’t! I’m reading just to see how this all turns out.

10. BABY ON BOARD by Dahlia Rose. A party-hard soldier gets a baby he didn’t know he fathered dropped off on his door step and turns to the nurse next door for help. I think this might end up being a nice combination of sweet and hot — something Ms. Rose is known for.

11. ON CALL: AFTERNOON by P.D. Singer. Usually engaging IR m/m’s are few and far between, but I found two this cycle. And this one has cat on the cover. Full of win if you love cats as much as I do.

12. MARK OF KANE by Nadia Aidan. A jewelry thief doesn’t know that her lover is working undercover to catch her? Yes, please. The sample was a ton of fun with well-written action. Can’t wait to read the rest.

13. SEDUCED BY THE WOLF by Zena Wynn. Found this in the aforementioned books I’d downloaded a sample for, but had forgotten to read. Well, the sample turned out to be crack-a-lacking. I was annoyed with myself for letting it collect dust.

14. CLAIMING SHAYLA (True Mates) by Zena Wynn. This isthe latest book in Ms. Wynn’s “True Mates” series. She’s shown a lot of growth as a writer over the years, and I am now ready to give the series another chance.

15. BRUSH STROKES by Dee Carney. For whatever reason, I really love women artists as heroes, so this book had me at hello.

TATTED by Renee LaRuse

July 17, 2012 in black woman white man, Book Reviews, bwwm, bwwm romance, C Reviews, cop, self-published, sensual, suspense

Description: When good cop, Misha Barrett, collides with reformed ex-con, Mark “Nello” Giovanello, it’s instant chemistry. But can they navigate their extreme differences to make a relationship work?

The Good: I love when authors really go opposite with the “opposites attract” trope and Ms. LaRuse absolutely does. TATTED is a very compelling story with an engaging and funny hero. It’s easy to see why a cop would initially be attracted to this bad boy, who turns out to be a truly dedicated love interest. I also love that he talked too much; he felt like a real guy. This novel is both interesting and different. I have a lot to say in “The Bad” section, but fully recommend giving TATTED a read if you’re looking for something different.

The Bad: There are quite a few clumsy execution issues, including ill-advised interior thought italics, long speeches, and exact statements about how the heroine is feeling (a symptom of telling not showing). Though the relationship starts out strong and sweet, the heroine eventually proves to be extremely uneven. For example she has little to no reaction to proof of the hero’s hound-dogging past, though she is supposed to be love shy after having been cheated on. And though the book has a nice circular plot within it, the overall story is dragged down by additional scenes and tacked on story lines. Overall, TATTED needs a firm-handed edit.

The Naughty: Sensual. Lots of sexual tension. Massage.

Editing issues: 3 typos. Word misusage. Head hopping. Improper formatting. Adverb abuse. POV errors.

Length: 149 pages

Final Grade: C+

SNATCHED by Sharon Cullars

July 17, 2012 in alpha male, B Reviews, black woman white man, Book Reviews, bwwm, bwwm romance, cop, self-published, sensual, suspense

Description: Who knew that a love of short ribs could get one character into so much trouble? But when an angry Nailah throws a short rib at a group of dangerous bikers, the person she hits, Dele — who just so happens to be an undercover cop disguised as one them — is forced to kidnap her. Now all he has to do is figure out how to keep both of them alive and solve the case.

The Good: I bought this, no sample needed, because Sharon Cullars has proven herself to be an amazing storyteller with a strong writing voice. The stakes are extremely high — I mean through the roof. Just when you think they’re as high as they can go, they jump up another level. This makes SNATCHED a burning page-turner, which will keep you on the edge of your seat. I couldn’t read it fast enough.

The Bad: As a character, Nailah is like a bad episode of “when keeping it real goes wrong.” Though I eventually came to accept her throwing a rib at a biker in a moment of pique, her continued hotheadness in the face of true danger made her frustrating and hard to root for at times. And though her complete inability to follow instructions or keep her mouth shut at crucial moments, eventually comes in handy in the overall story arc, it flatlines the heroine’s own arc.

The Naughty: Sensual. Sex in a hostage situation. Implied rape.

Editing issues: N/A

Publisher: Indie

Length: 129 pages

Final Grade: B
