HAVEN by Nia K. Foxx

June 18, 2012 in alpha male, B Reviews, black woman white man, Book Reviews, bwwm, bwwm romance, cop, doctor, Loose ID, older woman younger man, paranormal, steamy, werewolf

Description: As a shifter, who can’t shift, Ashlei Preen has pretty much given up on love — that is, until the new sexy shifter sheriff catches her scent.

The Good: I really liked the premise of a shifter who couldn’t shift living in a town of shifters. The sex was very hot, and fans of shifter romances will appreciate the primal details. There were also some really funny comedic moments and the town’s residents are a hoot.

The Bad: As much as I loved the premise, the story was weighed down by a really resistant, really insecure heroine, who isn’t given believable motivation. Her stubborn refusal to believe that the hero was truly interested in her was baffling and made for a frustrating read. I also didn’t understand the class system among these werewolves. At one point, it seemed that some conflict might arise out of the fact that the hero and heroine were from two different breeds, but nothing ever came of it, leaving me to wonder why this story detail had been introduced in the first place. Also, there is a great mystery that’s introduced way too late in the story and isn’t resolved. Overall, the novel needed a tighter structure, and a clearer emotional through line, especially for the heroine.

The Naughty: Steamy. Rough, animalistic sex.

Editing issues: One typo found.

TAKEN BY A NYMPH by Lizzie Lynn Lee

June 13, 2012 in B Reviews, black woman white man, Book Reviews, bwwm romance, erotic, Novella, older woman younger man, paranormal, self-published

Description: Nymph Prince Avaran de Charmange is having a terrible time finding a wife, which he needs in order to take his rightful place on the Surian throne, but then he encounters plus-sized beauty, Raine Jackson.

The Good: Well, I just loved that the heroine was a plus-sized, plain jane nurse divorcee. This story is funny, has good pacing, and also has good stakes and action. On another note, I really enjoyed Ms. Lee’s bio.

The Bad: The novella suffers from a lack of romantic conflict, though it’s well set-up for such. In the end, the hero has a great arc, but the couple does not.

The Naughty: Erotic. Explicit language. Tons of hot sex. Older woman, younger man.

Editing issues: 5 typos found.

Publisher: Indie

Length: 61 pages

Final Grade: B

JUICY by Pepper Pace

April 2, 2012 in B Reviews, bwwm, bwwm romance, older woman younger man, pregnant, self-published, sensual

Description: When, Juicy, a “dark as licorice” hairdresser with anger management issues is unexpectedly saved by Troy, a homeless white man with mental issues, really unexpected sparks fly.

The Good: Let’s start with the fact that Ms. Pace managed to make a homeless white hero with mental issues not only sexy, but appealing. That alone would have blown my mind, but she also manages to successfully throw many of the romance formula rules out the window — which only makes the novel even more romantic in my opinion. Ms. Pace has a strange sense of humor, and this makes for a very fresh novel. In many ways, JUICY is a page turner fueled by its own oddness.

The Bad: This is difficult, because I want to give this odd gem of a novel an A+, but it has quite a few issues that can’t be overlooked, mostly surrounding craft. Ms. Pace has tremendous talent, which is held back by often clunky execution. Her loose narrative walks a very thin line, only narrowly missing a full-on ramble at times. She writes poetically at times, but tends to follow every train of thought, which makes for a bloated story. Also, there are so many typos, I had to detract a full star. Somewhat like Latrivia Nelson, one feels Ms. Pace could go much further, if she engaged a stronger editor for this and future works.

The Naughty: Sensual. Rape (not depicted). Sex in barber chair.

Editing issues: Several typos.

Publisher: Indie Writer

Length: Novel-length

Final Grade: B-

EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN by Crystal Hubbard

January 23, 2012 in B Reviews, Book Reviews, bwwm, bwwm romance, Indigo Love Spectrum, older woman younger man, sensual

Description: 40-something professor Zae Richardson, never expected to find love again after the death of her beloved husband, but her hunky, blond dojo trainer, 30-something, Chip, might give the feisty widow a new lease on life. This is the follow-up to BURN.

The Good: Ms. Hubbard is a very funny writer, and there were many laugh out loud moments in this book. I really enjoyed BURN, and loved catching up with Gian and Cinder as they pursued adoption. The side characters were well-drawn and engaging. And the ending was really great. Also, there was a lot of English major fan service. If you love literature or were an English major, you’re going to really appreciate this novel.

The Bad: Unfortunately the book took quite a while to get started. The narrative  felt more like a series of swollen anecdotal scenes than a story with a strong, driving plot. For example, music is introduced as a hobby for both characters way late in the novel, then there are a few tangential scenes before we really get back to the main story. The narrative also suffers from quite a few talking head scenes and a saggy middle that seems to mark time until we get to the much more well-crafted ending. In general the story felt scattered and could have benefited from stronger editing.

The Naughty: Sensual.

Editing issues: Minor. One typo found.

Publisher: Indigo Love Spectrum

Length: Novel

Final Grade: B-
