WORTH THE PRICE (Hart’s Fall, Montana) by Delilah Hunt

October 10, 2012 in B Reviews, black woman white man, Book Reviews, bwwm, bwwm romance, married couple, rancher, self-published, steamy

Description: With her father facing possible bankruptcy, Danika turns to his worst enemy, Brandon Sharpe, for help. Brandon agrees to help her, but under one condition. She must become his wife!

The Good: I love, love, love, blackmail marriage stories, and I love Ms. Hunt’s writing, so this was a good combination for me. I’m also a sucker for a hero who isn’t traditionally handsome. Brandon is not only tortured and vulnerable, he also has both emotional and physical scars. Sexy! Sexy! Also, there’s a very intriguing B story with Danika’s best friend that will definitely bring me back for the next installment of the Hart’s Fall, Montana series.

The Bad: The story starts off strong, but falters when Ms. Hunt runs into a rather tricky bit of writer’s physics. Basically the heroine leaves, comes back, leaves, comes back, then leaves some more. This creates a yo-yo effect that not only diminishes the overall romance but makes the reader care less about Danika. It begins to feels as if she’s torturing the already tortured hero and makes the resolution less satisfying than it could have been. Leaving, like tears, is writing dynamite. If a character is going to leave, she should do so twice, maybe three times, tops, or else she risks alienating the reader.

The Naughty: Steamy. I hereby declare Ms. Hunt queen of the written blow job as hers are always very sexy.

Editing issues: Weird overuse of the word “tautened.”

Publisher: Swept Away Publishing (Indie)

Length: 169 pages

Final Grade: B- (three stars)

THE BROKEN H by J.L. Langley

August 22, 2012 in B Reviews, Book Reviews, erotic, gay male romance, Loose ID, May December romance, rancher

Description: When Sheriff Grayson Hunter is called back to his ancestral home, The Broken H, he has no idea he’s really getting a call to fall back in love with its handsome Apache foreman, Shane Cortez.

The Good: This couple is easy to root for, and Ms. Langley pays a lot of attention to developing their relationship in and out of bed. I loved that Shane wore glasses and had really long hair — both of which drove Grayson crazy with desire. Ms. Langley gives this couple several interesting obstacles, including a 13-year age gap and a secret past. Also, there definitely isn’t any skimping on the sex. This book is chock full of it.

The Bad: Way too many typos, and plot threads — a few of which don’t get wrapped up or are resolved in a flippant manner. Also, though the book is set in a fairly small town where everyone knows everyone, no one seems to realize anyone else is gay until they either fall in love or show blatant interest in another man. This rang false.

The Naughty: Erotic. Ejaculation. Slight festish.

Editing issues: Many typos. Word misusage.

Publisher: Loose Id

Length: 218 pages

Final Grade: B-

THE RANCHER’S ULTIMATUM by Nia K. Foxx

June 5, 2012 in alpha male, B Reviews, black woman white man, Book Reviews, bwwm, bwwm romance, erotic, Phaze Books, rancher, self-published, steamy

Description: Lynn James is willing to do anything to save her beloved stepfather’s ranch, but does “anything” include agreeing to rancher, Jake Ragnall’s erotic ultimatum?

The Good: This is a very sexy story with great stakes. Added to that, Ms. Foxx sets up a fantastic back story for the H/H’s parents, with a terrific nod to the older generation of loving couples who paved the way. I also loved that Lynn was full-figured and that this significantly added to her attraction for Jake.

The Bad: There’s a big reveal at the end, which is not set up well. The story could have functioned just as well without it. Also, there’s a rival element between Jake and Lynn’s stepbrother that doesn’t add up to much in the end.

The Naughty: Steamy verging on erotic. Light BDSM. Masturbation. Sex in hot tub.

Editing issues: 10 typos counted. Clunky grammar in places.

Publisher: *It looks like this is an indie re-release of an earlier story originally with Phaze Books.

Length: 145 pages

Final Grade: B+

STAKING HIS CLAIM by Lynda Chance

April 25, 2012 in alpha male, B Reviews, bi-racial heroine, Book Reviews, Hispanic, Hispanic hero, Novella, rancher, self-published, sensual, steamy, white woman latin man, wwlm

Description: When alpha male rancher, Raul Vega, meets innocent nursing student, Elaina Ruiz, he works hard to resist her, believing she’s too young for him. Elaina finds Raul too intense and doesn’t disabuse him of the notion, even though she’s old enough for what he has in mind. But how long can they deny their attraction?

The GoodChance’s writing has a lot of energy, which is harder to achieve than one might think. You won’t get bored, and you’ll keep on turning the pages. Also, this novella is a bargain at $0.99.

The Bad:

The Hero (Hispanic): It’s a thin line between aggressive would-be lover and judgmental bully with Raul, and if you’re sensitive to that line in alpha males, you might have trouble fully enjoying this story.

The Heroine (white and Hispanic): When dealing with alpha males, the characterization of the heroine has to be even more on point, so that it doesn’t feel like she’s being completely overshadowed by a stronger personality. In this case, Elaina needs considerable character work, as her motivation is unclear and often shaky. She doesn’t know what she wants from life or love, which happens all the time in real life, but in book life it’s hard to give a character these traits without her coming across as wishy-washy and childish as opposed to truly conflicted.

Craft: Contradiction issues. Ex. Elaina was stunned at his agreement and didn’t even think to question his sincerity. He was sincere. She would bet on it. “Are you serious?” [she asked]. Basically, the character is saying she doesn’t question the hero’s sincerity before turning around and questioning his sincerity. There are a few contradictory turns like that.

The Naughty: Sensual>Steamy. Virgin.

Editing issues: Minor. 2 typos found.

Publisher: Indie

Length: 91 pages (Amazon estimate)

Final Grade: C+
