SHERRY’S WOLF by Maddy Barone

June 7, 2012 in bi-racial heroine, Book Reviews, bwnm, Novella, paranormal, scifi, self-published, sensual, shifter(s), werewolf

Description: Sherry Rowe is reeling from 1) surviving a plane crash that sling-shotted her fifty years into the future, where after a nuclear disaster, there are very few women and a ton of Native American werewolves looking to mate; 2) the death of her philandering, abusive husband who was also on the plane, and 3) a werewolf named Jumping Stag, who won’t take no for answer.

The Good: This is a great premise. I also love that Sherry is Catholic and really conflicted about her problematic marriage, even now that its over. Also, who doesn’t love a group of men who hold women in the highest regard. And I really like that Jumping Stag is a virgin — it made their sex scene hotter somehow.

The Bad: Sadly this a case of a great premise completely squandered by terrible execution. SHERRY’S WOLF is poorly structured, feels rushed, and doesn’t have much in the way of compelling conflict. We’re told that Sherry is shy and scared but she comes off as accusatory, wishy-washy, and selfish, despite her sympathetic backstory. Most readers will wonder why Jumping Stag’s “wolf” chose her. Most writers will wonder why neither hero nor heroine was given a true arc before getting shoved into a rather abrupt ending.

The Naughty: Sensual. Male Virgin.

Editing issues: 4 typos found. Weird dialogue formatting on the Kindle.

THE CONTRACT by Zena Wynn

April 9, 2012 in B Reviews, erotic, married couple, Novella, Phaze Books, scifi, white woman latin man, wwlm

Description: Cecily marries Billy, but is forced by his company to also take Billy’s brother Renardo as a husband and lover after Renardo’s wife dies. Drama.

The Good: Ms. Wynn takes a complex situation and makes it surprisingly simple and extremely hot. The reader feels for her main character, who really put in a tug-of-war situation. Though the drama is plentiful it also feels organic and earned. Also, I loved that the main characters are working class. And Ms. Wynn’s world building is so seamless, I kept forgetting that this was technically a sci-fi romance. She never let the world building overshadow the story.

The Bad: The emotional arc is well-plotted and earned, but it doesn’t necessarily feel like the sexual arc is fully resolved. Also, the cover is somewhat baffling. Not sure what, if anything, it has to do with the actual story.

The Naughty: Erotic. Multiple partners.

Editing issues: 3 typos. Dialogue weirdly formatted on Kindle app.

Publisher: Phaze Books

Length: 47 pages

Final Grade: B+

WHIMSY by Thayer King

March 26, 2012 in B Reviews, black woman white man, Book Reviews, bwwm, bwwm romance, erotic, Evernight Publishing, king, scifi

Description: In a case of some seriously mistaken identity, Princess Whimsy Featherstone is sold to King Gaedrian as a pleasure slave. Gaedrian is quite unhappily under the influence of Fate, a drug that drives its taker wild with lust until he finds his true mate. Can fate bring them together?

The Good: This set-up is great and had me at go. And the world-building in WHIMSY is just terrific. As usual with Ms. King’s writing, the sex is off-the-hook H.O.T. and the build up to it is very well done. There’s also a side character named Dark, who is so cold-yet-complex, he stole every scene he was in. He deserves and truly needs his own book.

The Bad: While WHIMSY’s situation is well-developed, the character of Whimsy herself isn’t.  It was difficult to understand why she kept her identity hiddent. An arc between her and Gaedrin’s mom is never fully resolved. Nor is Whimsy’s own inner-arc. She remains overly hesitant until the end, and she doesn’t ask questions to the point of being convenient.

Also, the end of the book, though fun, is rushed.

The Naughty: Erotic. Withheld sex. Virgin.

Editing issues: One typo. Weird dialogue formatting.

Publisher: Evernight Publishing

Length: 38,860 words

Final Grade: B

STRANGE LITTLE BAND by Nancy Brauer and Vanessa Brooks

December 6, 2011 in A Reviews, Book Reviews, bwwm, paranormal, scifi, self-published

Description: Shane and Addison, two brilliant and egotistical psychics fall for each other hard after being brought together by their corporate overlords’ breeding program. A tumultuous and tortured love affair, spanning 12 years, ensues.

The Good: STRANGE LITTLE BAND is probably the strangest little IR romance I’ve ever read, and I really dug it. It’s kind of like DR. WHO meets RED DWARF meets Wolfram and Heart (the evil corp from the ANGEL series) meets DAYS OF OUR LIVES. I like(d) all of those programs, so I was sold from the start. And I couldn’t download the rest of the novel fast enough after reading the sample. It was really interesting to read a romance embedded inside an action-filled family drama, and I love that the heroine has an even stronger sexual appetite than the hero. Seriously, I wanted this to be a TV series so bad that I’m having a bit of trouble not remembering it as such.

The Bad: Shane calls Addison “bitch” and “whore” more than he calls her by her actual name. For some readers this will be really off-putting. There’s total overuse of the word “smirked,” and you’re either going to love or hate how involved Addison’s two kids get with the story.

The Naughty: Steamy. Shape-shifting sex, psychic sex, sex with multiple partners, foursome.

Editing issues: Minor. I counted six typos.
