CARNAL KNOWLEDGE by Celeste Anwar

December 11, 2012 in black woman white man, Book Reviews, bwwm, bwwm romance, paranormal, self-published, shifter(s), steamy, vampire, werewolf

Description: When sassy Kaeli collides with Cajun Lycan, Navarre Lyssandro, it’s chemistry at first sight. If they can survive the vampires who are out to get Navarre, they just might make it work.

The Good: Really good action scenes. Kaeli was very sassy and Navarre was very sexy with clever claws that extended (kind of like Wolverine’s). Also, gotta love a Cajun accent.

The Bad: Though I liked the characters, there was no time to get to know or care about them. And though the story has really good bones, it was clumsily executed. It felt like getting an outline as opposed to a fully fleshed out short. Also, see the Editing section.

The Naughty: Steamy. Explicit language.

Editing issues: Weird indents in places. Incorrect capitalization in places. Lots of syntax errors.

Publisher: Indie Author

Length: Short (less than 1000 locations on Kindle)

Final Grade: C

SHIRA by Tressie Lockwood

November 13, 2012 in Amira Press, B Reviews, black woman white man, Book Reviews, bwwm romance, erotic, paranormal, shifter(s)

Description: Shira narrowly escapes an abusive relationship, only to find herself in the lair of much more dangerous, not to mention grumpy, predator — a leopard shifter named Max. But could this strange relationship eventually turn into love?

The Good: I respected Shira’s desire to get out of her abusive relationship, and cheered for her to do so. Also, I liked that she had an even better relationship with Max’s leopard than the hero himself.

The Bad: Great obstacles are set up, only to be somewhat clumsily surmounted. Max’s initial resistance to a relationship with Shira is overcome with an unexplained change of heart, and the final showdown with the main villain is a little too neat.

The Naughty: Erotic.

Editing issues: Minor

Publisher: Amira Press

Length: 94 pages

LAID BEAR by Eve Vaughn

September 12, 2012 in B Reviews, bi-racial heroine, Book Reviews, doctor, erotic, menage quartro, mmfm, paranormal, Samhain Publishing, shifter(s), suspense, wmwmbwwm

Description: After a near-fatal collision, Zora Calloway wakes up in the cabin of three sexy bear-shifter cousins determined to claim her as their mate. Goldilocks and the three bears, indeed!

The Good: This is a really sexy take on a beloved fairytale. Ms. Vaughn is a master of old-school erotic romance structure, and the sex really drives the story. But she also gives us a really interesting and well-executed mystery — it provides just the right amount of plot. I also loved that the level-headed, somewhat beta bear was in charge, and this word pairing: “awesomely serious.”

The Bad: The relationship-building gets a little lost in the fray of thick sexual tension during the first half of the book. And Heath and Logan often read as alike, as opposed to as two distinct characters.

The Naughty: Erotic. Menage.

Editing issues: Minor

Publisher: Samhain Publishing, Ltd.

CLAIMING SHAYLA (True Mates) by Zena Wynn

August 8, 2012 in alpha male, B Reviews, bi-racial heroine, Book Reviews, erotic, Loose ID, paranormal, pregnant, shifter(s), suspense, werewolf

Description: When Shayla flees Refuge, North Carolina after an intense mating session with Rory McFelan, she thought she was done with the alpha of the Sparrowhawks. But as it turns out, she has to go back for her favorite cousin’s wedding. Also, she’s pregnant. And perhaps most importantly of all, Rory isn’t at all prepared to let her go.

The Good: As always, Ms. Wynn’s excels at introducing really hot sex into unique situations. There’s a lot going on in this book plot-wise: a rip-roaring romance, a meaty family mystery, and some seriously hardcore sex. Ms. Wynn really goes there — so sensitive readers, be warned. I was worried at points by how many balls she had going up in the air, but somehow she manages to juggle them and wrap it all up with a very satisfying conclusion. There’s also a character introduction that is so crazy-intriguing, you’ll be dying for him to get his own True Mates book. Hopefully it’s coming soon!

The Bad:Shayla as a character has serious “show vs. tell” problems. She’s supposed to be a genius, we never see her use her brain. At one point she proudly proclaims, “I won’t whine, mope, or sulk in some corner like a child” after spending several pages whining and moping around in a childish funk. She claims to be traumatized by growing up different, but we never see any evidence of this. In the end she feels like a collection of stated character traits that are never proven. To this point, many readers will figure out an important component of the mystery way before Shayla does, which brings us back to the genius issue.

Also, there are so many characters and POVs, it’s hard to keep them all straight. It’s a bit like watching TRUE BLOOD. In fact, even though she’s bi-racial (black and Asian), Shayla reminds me a bit of Rutina Wesley’s character, Tara — readers are either going to love her or hate her.

The Naughty: Erotic. Physical fighting between couple. Lots of exhibition. Sex while in werewolf form. Hardcore.

Editing issues: 4 typos found.

Length: 274

SEDUCED BY THE WOLF by Zena Wynn

July 24, 2012 in A Reviews, alpha male, black woman white man, Book Reviews, bwwm, bwwm romance, paranormal, Phaze Books, shifter(s), werewolf

Description: Von Washington has a secret: she has never stopped being pen pals with Master Sergeant Sean Jacobson, the former army buddy of her controlling fiancé. But when Sean comes to town several secrets will be revealed, including that he’s a werewolf!

The Good: This is great read with exceptional storytelling, gasp-out-loud twists and turns, and hot, hot, HOT sex. I loved how the author dealt with Sean’s ongoing struggles to control his wolf. And Von’s cousin is awesome. She made me want to call up my favorite cousin for a long overdue chat.

The Bad: The epilogue feels tacked on and rushed.

The Naughty: Erotic. Women struggling with sexuality. Sexual situations depicted with two different men.

Editing issues: 7 typos found. “Misfortunate” is barely a word and not recognized by most dictionaries. I wish IR authors would stop using it.”Unfortunate” is always the better choice.

Publisher: Phaze Books

Length: 128 pages

SHERRY’S WOLF by Maddy Barone

June 7, 2012 in bi-racial heroine, Book Reviews, bwnm, Novella, paranormal, scifi, self-published, sensual, shifter(s), werewolf

Description: Sherry Rowe is reeling from 1) surviving a plane crash that sling-shotted her fifty years into the future, where after a nuclear disaster, there are very few women and a ton of Native American werewolves looking to mate; 2) the death of her philandering, abusive husband who was also on the plane, and 3) a werewolf named Jumping Stag, who won’t take no for answer.

The Good: This is a great premise. I also love that Sherry is Catholic and really conflicted about her problematic marriage, even now that its over. Also, who doesn’t love a group of men who hold women in the highest regard. And I really like that Jumping Stag is a virgin — it made their sex scene hotter somehow.

The Bad: Sadly this a case of a great premise completely squandered by terrible execution. SHERRY’S WOLF is poorly structured, feels rushed, and doesn’t have much in the way of compelling conflict. We’re told that Sherry is shy and scared but she comes off as accusatory, wishy-washy, and selfish, despite her sympathetic backstory. Most readers will wonder why Jumping Stag’s “wolf” chose her. Most writers will wonder why neither hero nor heroine was given a true arc before getting shoved into a rather abrupt ending.

The Naughty: Sensual. Male Virgin.

Editing issues: 4 typos found. Weird dialogue formatting on the Kindle.

Publisher: Indie

Length: 86 pages

WAY OF THE WOLF by Netherland St. James

April 16, 2012 in Book Reviews, boss, D Reviews, erotic, menage trois, mmf, office romance, paranormal, self-published, shifter(s), short story, werewolf

Description: Trace and Dustin are best friend and shifter-wolves, and they have a very interesting problem. They’re both in love with the same woman, and she happens to be their employee.

The Good: This is a good situation. And the sex is hot.

The Bad: Almost the entire story is told and not shown. I’m still not sure if Olivia is black or white — the Amazon tags say bwwm, but she’s not described in physical terms outside of the two leads desire. The story has somewhat good bones, but ultimately fails due to really poor execution.

The Naughty: Erotic. Menage.

Editing issues: 2 typos

Publisher: Capri Montgomery Books (Indie author)

Length: 7,000+ words

Final Grade: D+

WOLF IN WAITING by Shyla Colt

March 28, 2012 in alpha male, black woman white man, Book Reviews, Breathless Press, bwwm, bwwm romance, C Reviews, erotic, Novella, paranormal, shifter(s), suspense, werewolf

Description: Years ago Kalyx and Luz were best friends in love, bonded over their mutual inability to shape shift. But when Luz shifts, Kalyx runs away, feeling their love can’t transcend their pack caste. Now she’s back for her sister’s wedding. Can Luz, who never stopped loving her, convince her that they belong together?

The Good: This is a hot and compelling story. I love tortured alphas, and Luz is that.

The Bad: There’s too much story stuffed into too small of a word count. And though, Ms. Colt has excellent plot points, she doesn’t take the time to really explore any of them, not even the H/H’s intriguing back story. This was a good story diminished by lack of good craft. Everything feels rushed and nothing is truly fleshed out.

The Naughty: Erotic. Masturbation.

Editing issues: One typo found. Clumsy grammar and word choice in places.

Publisher: Breathless Press

Length: Novella (12, 127 words)

Final Grade: C+

SUCK IT UP (Grassroots Series, Book Two) by Emma Hillman

January 4, 2012 in Book Reviews, bwwm, C Reviews, doctor, erotic, Novella, paranormal, Resplendence Publishing, shifter(s)

Description: Everybody likes Dr. Nate Franks, except his prickly shifter nurse, Kellie. However, after he finds out and solves her secret — the one that got her tortured by and eventually kicked out of her original pack — they are literally and passionately bonded.

The Good: Ms. Hillman sets up a great inner-character conflict for her heroine, in that she’s heterosexual while her inner-lioness prefers women. I have never seen this situation before and was immediately intrigued. I also loved the cover.

The Bad: Ms. Hillman set up a great situation, yes,  but failed to fully develop it. In general there was a lack of craft to this story. Nate keeps secrets that would be better shared for unstated reasons. Kellie’s character is uneven, never quite matching the intriguing back story that has been set up for her. Neither the hero nor the heroine have strong or clear story arcs. There are a lot of great ideas presented here that go left unexplored. Ms. Hillman is a better pantser than most novelists, but many of the inherent problems with “making it up as you go along” are on display in this story.

The Naughty: Erotic. Explicit language.

Editing issues: Minor (2 typos and a few questionable contractions)

Publisher: Resplendence Publishing

Length: Novella

Final Grade: C
