THE ULTIMATE MERGER by Delaney Diamond

September 11, 2012 in A Reviews, black woman hispanic man, Book Reviews, business man, bwlm, Hispanic, Hispanic hero, self-published, sensual, short story

Description: When Brazilian hotelier, Renaldo, and investment banker, Sabrina meet. it’s sizzling chemistry at first sight. But he’s only in the country for a little while. Can they take their relationship from fling status to the ultimate merger?

The Good: Ms. Diamond is a very dynamic, consistent, and immediately engaging writer. She keeps her part in the indie author-reader covenant better than most, and her books are always solidly-structured and cleanly-written — she’s on top of her craft. This story is short, sweet, and as of this writing, totally free. THE ULTIMATE MERGER is a great intro to her longer works.

The Bad: Though I was satisfied with the A-story romance, it felt like the B story with her addict cousin was given short shrift.

The Naughty: Sensual. Seduction. Sex on first meet.

Editing issues: None

Publisher: Indie

Length: 51 pages

Final Grade: A-

TRANSGENDER HELL by Downy Davis

August 20, 2012 in black woman white man, Book Reviews, bwwm, bwwm romance, Christian, D Reviews, short story, sweet, Topaz Publishing, transgender

Description: Khaki has just married Bram, the man of her dreams. There’s just one problem: she hasn’t told him she was born a man.

The Good: I really love that the heroine of this novel is transgender, and I would really like to see even more out-of-the-box characters like this in IR. Ms. Davis does not shy away from going into transgender specifics: for example we’re told about Khaki’s operation, boob job, and hormone therapy; and when Khaki goes home to visit, she still helps her father with the same stuff she helped him with when she was living as a boy. Also the situation was compelling enough for me to finish the book.

The Bad: Unfortunately, though the writer’s heart was in the right place, this book was almost a complete craft fail. The characters were never fully explored. I was aghast that Khaki hadn’t told Bram her origin story before they married, and didn’t feel her character had sufficient motivation to keep this information for him. Bram is uneven as a character, and the motivation for most of his actions, outside of marrying Khaki so soon (she doesn’t believe in sex before marriage) was unclear. The resolution was rushed and rang false, given what we had learned about Bram, Khaki, and her family. Also, there were many instances of characters telling each other memories and stories they already knew, lots of lazy exposition. This story feels like a house with good bones, that needs a top to bottom renovation in terms of editing.

The Naughty: Sweet. Christian. Inspirational. No sex.

Editing issues: Typos. Clunky verging on terrible grammar throughout.

Publisher: Topaz Publishing

Length: 45 pages

WAY OF THE WOLF by Netherland St. James

April 16, 2012 in Book Reviews, boss, D Reviews, erotic, menage trois, mmf, office romance, paranormal, self-published, shifter(s), short story, werewolf

Description: Trace and Dustin are best friend and shifter-wolves, and they have a very interesting problem. They’re both in love with the same woman, and she happens to be their employee.

The Good: This is a good situation. And the sex is hot.

The Bad: Almost the entire story is told and not shown. I’m still not sure if Olivia is black or white — the Amazon tags say bwwm, but she’s not described in physical terms outside of the two leads desire. The story has somewhat good bones, but ultimately fails due to really poor execution.

The Naughty: Erotic. Menage.

Editing issues: 2 typos

Publisher: Capri Montgomery Books (Indie author)

Length: 7,000+ words

Final Grade: D+

KNOCKING BOOTS by J.M. Snyder

April 4, 2012 in B Reviews, Book Reviews, co-workers, erotic, gay male romance, latin man white man, self-published, short story

Description: Johnny thinks he’s the only ranch hand who likes guys, but then he catches a Mexican migrant worker named Delfino with the ranch boss. Can Johnny find a way to hook up with the sexy vaquero, too?

The Good: The sex was H.O.T. And Delfino was written very sexy.

The Bad: This story is extremely short for its price point. And the end isn’t particularly satisfying. Though tagged as a gay interracial romance, it isn’t very romantic.

The Naughty: Erotic. Peeping Tom.

Editing issues: No typos found

Publisher: Indie Author

Length: 8339 words (Smashwords approximation)

Final Grade: B-

SWEET SURRENDER by Nikki Winter

November 17, 2011 in Book Reviews, bwwm, C Reviews, self-published, short story

Description: When Brianna Grayson tries to pull a love ‘em and leave ‘em on her brother-in-law, Dane Halima, she finds out the sexy way that this sheriff won’t take no for an answer.

The Good: I love that the heroine is big-boned. And Ms. Winter infuses humor in with her smoking hot sex scenes.

The Bad: I don’t mind short and sweet, but I abhor short and underdeveloped.  Unfortunately this was the latter. Ms. Winter gives Brianna a great character profile, but leaves her emotional life and relationship with Dane unexplored. This lack of character and story development makes Brianna come off as overly-prickly, and though we’re told that Dane loves her attitude, we’re not shown why. For $2.99, this story was just too short — it could easily have been expanded into a novella.

The Naughty: Erotic, explicit sex scenes and language.

Editing issues: One typo.

Publisher: Beautiful Trouble Publishing

Length: short-short (like really short)

Final Grade: C
