BABY GIRL AND THE MEAN BOSS by Pepper Pace

December 6, 2012 in A Reviews, black woman white man, Book Reviews, boss, bwwm, bwwm romance, co-workers, self-published, steamy

Description: Nicole–Baby Girl to her co-workers, even though she’s not that young–barely manages to put up with her grumpy boss, Marty. That is, until she gets into a terrible car accident and he unexpectedly comes through. Could this be a case of mistaken intentions, or is Nicole’s mean boss the perfect guy for her?

The Good: This book is a highly romantic read, with one of my favorite tropes, damaged people–in this case literally and figuratively–finding healing in each other. I love that the heroine and the hero get to see each other at their worst, and Ms. Pace does a great job of illuminating the vulnerable people under their hard shells. There’s also a nice emotional mystery running through the story. You’ll be dying to know what’s made these two people the way they are. The answers are very satisfying, as isthe epilogue. BABY GIRL AND THE MEAN BOSS is well worth its small price.

The Bad: See editing.

The Naughty: Steamy. Lots of sexual tension. Masturbation.

Editing issues: Several typos. Adverb abuse.

Publisher: Indie Author

Length: 132 pages

TAMING THE SCOTSMAN by Sienna Mynx

June 4, 2012 in alpha male, B Reviews, black woman white man, Book Reviews, boss, business man, bwwm, bwwm romance, Christmas, office romance, self-published, steamy

Description: When Annamarie “Jayla” Howard is convinced to come work at a Scottish castle by her younger brother, she never dreams she’ll become embroiled in a tumultuous affair with its sexy-but-arrogant owner, Baron Alec Cavanaugh.

The Good: This book is a serious page-turner. The only reason I didn’t read it in two sittings was because I had to actually do my dayjob — which I consequentially began to resent for keeping me from further reading. If you like soap opera and yelling, “Oh no, he didn’t!” at your books (as I do), then you will love TAMING THE SCOTSMAN. It has well-constructed conflict, a compelling alpha male who loves soul music, really wonderful cultural details about Scotland, and somehow Ms. Mynx manages to keep things sexy even in between the actual sexing. I love the twist on the “taming of the shrew” — especially since this alpha male really, really, really needs taming. You’ll hopefully have fun getting mad at him before getting won over by him again and again. Also, the book is a more-than-good length for it’s price.

The Bad: Jayla as a character was a bit uneven, at times caving in when perhaps the reader would not. This will make her feel a little inconsistent and weak to some readers. Ms. Mynx sets up quite a few clocks, which become hard to track and don’t pay off. There are a few ill-advised italicized dream and memory passages that not only stopped the story’s momentum, but also felt completely unneeded. And the ending felt a bit rushed, not as firm as a reader might want.

The Naughty: Steamy verging on erotic. Sex on a train. Delicious blackmail.

Editing issues: Quite a few typos (over 10). Word misusage. Dialogue weirdly formatted on Kindle.

Publisher: The Divas Pen LLC (indie)

Length: 300 pages

Final Grade: B+

EMPLOYEE RELATIONS by Wynter Daniels

March 20, 2012 in B Reviews, black woman white man, Book Reviews, boss, business man, bwwm, bwwm romance, erotic, May December romance, self-published, steamy

Description: When down-on-her-luck Scarlet Eldrige accepts a job as a nanny for a hellion teen, she’s thoroughly unprepared for the passion her charge’s father, Ethan, makes her feel. Can she keep both the unruly teenager and her attraction to Ethan in check?

The Good: Scarlet is a very sweet girl, and the theme of luck is played out very well. The story had a strong, compelling plot, and the sex scenes were hot and well-executed. Certainly worth the very small price!

The Bad: Scarlet is very concerned that everyone (including her bratty charge) likes her, and at times comes off as a doormat. Readers who don’t like “weak” characters, will find this heroine a bit frustrating. Also, there is a somewhat cliche, and ultimately unneeded beginning with the old cheating boyfriend break-up scene.

The Naughty: Steamy>Erotic. Serious sexual tension.

Editing issues: Seven typos counted. Weird formatting.

Publisher: Self-Published

Length: Novel

Final Grade: B+

A PIECE OF ME by Yvette Hines

January 30, 2012 in B Reviews, Book Reviews, boss, bwwm, bwwm romance, co-workers, Novella, office romance, self-published, steamy

Description: When Neal Stephens gets in horrific accident, his widowed assistant, Amana, literally saves his life by giving him one of her kidneys. So when she tells him that what she wants most is a baby, he gives her the one-night stand of a lifetime. But will one night be enough for either of them?

The Good: I used to love secretary/boss romances back in the day, so I was really happy to read one with an IR twist. I love that Amana is really tall — you don’t see that often. Also, the two made a lot of sense as a couple. I was really rooting for them to be together.

The Bad: While I loved that a lot of the story was told from Neal’s point of view, it made Amana’s character feel a little underdeveloped in contrast. Also, Neal is supposed to be blond, but the cover model has dark hair.

The Naughty: Steamy bordering on erotic. Explicit language.

Editing issues: Minor. Three typos found.

Publisher: Romance Management, Inc.

Length: Novella/60 pages

Final Grade: B

SUCK IT UP (Grassroots Series, Book Two) by Emma Hillman

January 4, 2012 in Book Reviews, bwwm, C Reviews, doctor, erotic, Novella, paranormal, Resplendence Publishing, shifter(s)

Description: Everybody likes Dr. Nate Franks, except his prickly shifter nurse, Kellie. However, after he finds out and solves her secret — the one that got her tortured by and eventually kicked out of her original pack — they are literally and passionately bonded.

The Good: Ms. Hillman sets up a great inner-character conflict for her heroine, in that she’s heterosexual while her inner-lioness prefers women. I have never seen this situation before and was immediately intrigued. I also loved the cover.

The Bad: Ms. Hillman set up a great situation, yes,  but failed to fully develop it. In general there was a lack of craft to this story. Nate keeps secrets that would be better shared for unstated reasons. Kellie’s character is uneven, never quite matching the intriguing back story that has been set up for her. Neither the hero nor the heroine have strong or clear story arcs. There are a lot of great ideas presented here that go left unexplored. Ms. Hillman is a better pantser than most novelists, but many of the inherent problems with “making it up as you go along” are on display in this story.

The Naughty: Erotic. Explicit language.

Editing issues: Minor (2 typos and a few questionable contractions)

Publisher: Resplendence Publishing

Length: Novella

Final Grade: C

LOVE SCRIPT: Deluxe by Tiffany Ashley

November 7, 2011 in B Reviews, Book Reviews, boss, bwwm, self-published

Description: After she catches her boyfriend cheating, overworked Laney Parks decides to take a cruise by herself. It just so happens that the CEO of her company, Nick Sinclair, is on the cruise and needs her to pretend to be his wife!

The Good: Well, the sex was extremely top-notch. Ms. Ashley does “my head’s telling me no, but my body’s telling me yes” very well. Also, the premise is stellar and that cover is to die for. Ms. Ashley could probably make a lot of money designing covers for other writers. It’s what got me to buy the book for $8.99, no sample needed.

The Bad: Nick is very hard to like. He’s callous and untrustworthy and though they got along very well in bed, the logical part of me couldn’t quite connect with them as a couple. Also, a few of the cruise scenes seemed repetitive, and Nick and Laney fight so much, that got repetitive, too.

The Naughty: Forced seduction, erotic descriptions.

Editing issues: Weird formatting throughout.

Publisher: Circle 1 Publishing

Length: 298 pages

Final Grade: B-

CANDY GIRL by Eve Vaughn

October 25, 2011 in Book Reviews, bwwm, C Reviews, Novella

Description: Overly nice girl, Julie Bennett discovers that Gabriel Carland, her cold boss, actually runs hot for her.

The Good: It’s always fun to see a pushover finally stand up for herself. And the sex is both playful and hot. Nice girls do!

The Bad: The story feels a bit rushed, especially when it comes to the emotional arc. After the initial seduction, Gabriel Carland isn’t given much to do or any further personal development.

The Naughty: Anal, explicit sex, graphic language, toys.

Editing issues: No

Publisher: Loose Id

Length: Novella

Final Grade: C
