ACTING WITCHY by Thayer King

May 9, 2012 in alpha male, B Reviews, bi-racial heroine, black woman white man, Book Reviews, bwwm romance, erotic, Evernight Publishing, paranormal, witch

Description: When actress Mystique Gray meets writer/director/producer/actor/super-possessive alpha male Sean Savage, their chemistry is undeniable, but Mystique has some serious reservations — mainly surrounding the fact that he’s a witch!

The Good: Well, as always with Ms. King, the sex is super-hot. Seriously, she should write a how-to manual on this, because she does it really well. Also, this is a surprisingly full story for it’s length. Well worth the $4.99, you’ll feel like you’ve “read a book.” There’s also a very nice set-up for the hero’s brother, who is super-intriguing and really needs to have a book of his own.

The Bad: While the plot is really tight, the heroine’s motivations aren’t made clear until rather late in the book — which gives us plenty of time to get roiling mad at her and wonder why she’s being so resistant. The character’s motivation needed to be revealed much, much earlier, so that we could all be on the same page with — as opposed to mad at — her. But if anyone is reading this who’s on the verge of putting the book down, let me assure you, she has what turns out to be sound and fascinating reasons for resisting this relationship at every turn.

The Naughty: Erotic. Huge build up and tension. Explicit language.

Editing issues: No typos found. Weird dialogue formatting on Kindle app.

Publisher: Evernight Publishing

Length: 34K+ words

Final Grade: B+

WHIMSY by Thayer King

March 26, 2012 in B Reviews, black woman white man, Book Reviews, bwwm, bwwm romance, erotic, Evernight Publishing, king, scifi

Description: In a case of some seriously mistaken identity, Princess Whimsy Featherstone is sold to King Gaedrian as a pleasure slave. Gaedrian is quite unhappily under the influence of Fate, a drug that drives its taker wild with lust until he finds his true mate. Can fate bring them together?

The Good: This set-up is great and had me at go. And the world-building in WHIMSY is just terrific. As usual with Ms. King’s writing, the sex is off-the-hook H.O.T. and the build up to it is very well done. There’s also a side character named Dark, who is so cold-yet-complex, he stole every scene he was in. He deserves and truly needs his own book.

The Bad: While WHIMSY’s situation is well-developed, the character of Whimsy herself isn’t.  It was difficult to understand why she kept her identity hiddent. An arc between her and Gaedrin’s mom is never fully resolved. Nor is Whimsy’s own inner-arc. She remains overly hesitant until the end, and she doesn’t ask questions to the point of being convenient.

Also, the end of the book, though fun, is rushed.

The Naughty: Erotic. Withheld sex. Virgin.

Editing issues: One typo. Weird dialogue formatting.

Publisher: Evernight Publishing

Length: 38,860 words

Final Grade: B

CHRISTMAS & FOREVER by Delilah Hunt

December 20, 2011 in A Reviews, Book Reviews, bwwm, Christmas, doctor, erotic, Evernight Publishing, May December romance

Description: Aiden, a traumatized and wounded doctor, tries to resist his attraction to, Liya, the much younger receptionist at his clinic. But when they both end up at his cabin for the holidays, even the snow can’t stop them from heating up the winter nights.

The Good: Ms. Hunt has a weird way of making me like situations that I don’t normally like. For example, I didn’t think her mute cowboy romance, LOVE UNSPOKEN, would be quite to my taste (I only read it on the strength of an excerpt she posted on another IR site), but it was one of my favorite romances of the year. And, I’ve never been a fan of May/December romances but I really loved this one. It was like watching Dr. House fall in love, even though he was super-resistant to it. Also, unlike many novellas, C&F was a well-developed and satisfying read.

The Bad: The doctor’s injured leg was often referenced — but then kind of got dropped during the sex scenes. This is a very small quibble, though, because those scenes were H.O.T.

The Naughty: Erotic heat level. Faint dom/sub.

Editing issues: Minor. I counted 5 typos.

Publisher: Evernight Publishing

Length: Novella

Final Grade: A-
