Theodora Taylor

SLIGHTLY SINFUL by Yvette Hines

June 14, 2012 in alpha male, B Reviews, bi-racial heroine, black woman hispanic man, Book Reviews, business man, bwlm, erotic, Hispanic, Hispanic hero, self-published

Description: While waiting to hear back about a lucrative contract, Delilah Reynolds, decides to accept her friend’s invitation to a risqué weekend in the Bahamas. She ends up have the mind-blowing sex experience of a lifetime with a mysterious stranger, but what will happen when they meet again in the real world?

The Good: This book was scorching hot with wonderfully naughty situations and sex. Not for the faint-of-heart reader. This isn’t your walks-on-the-beach sort of book. Whoo, boy!

The Bad: The resolution comes a bit too quickly, squandering much of the great conflict that’s been built up. Also, the last sex scene feels more like a one more scene, than a culmination or even a confirmation of love.

The Naughty: Erotic. Multiple partners. Orgy. Anal.

Editing issues: 6 typos found.

Publisher: Indie

Length: 79 pages

Final Grade: B

RESCUE ME by Shara Azod

June 12, 2012 in alpha male, B Reviews, black woman white man, Book Reviews, business man, bwwm romance, Novella, self-published, steamy

Description: When Dieter inadvertently rescues Deja from the Croatian mafia, he plans to make her his mistress, but his heart, soon has him demanding more from the beautiful woman than just sex.

The Good: I really loved that the hero hailed from Germany. Ms. Azod did a wonderful job of building up to the sex, and she created really great villains with nice, specific details. The stakes are also well set. It is impossible for the reader not to want to see Deja truly rescued from the life that awaits her.

The Bad: The great premise is hindered by a lack of character and story development. Dieter’s characterization suffers from excessive interior dialogue. And Deja, in particular, is so underwritten that it’s hard to get a good read on her.

Almost every man she encounters instantly likes her and they’re willing to go through extremes to protect her or get her back, but the author fails to present us with a character who would believably inspire such commitments. One can’t just say that a character exudes light and innocence, she has to be shown doing so — and though Deja’s situation is lamentable, at no point does she come across as “light and innocent.”

The mother-daughter relationship is also way undercooked, which is a bit strange, since it ends up becoming a thing over the course of the story. In the end, this felt like a novella written too quickly and made up of instant connections, none of which were earned. Lastly, anyone who has ever been any kind of office assistant will hate the disrespectful way Dieter treats his own assistant.

The Naughty: Steamy. Lots and lots of sexual tension.

Editing issues: 6 typos found. Weird indentation. Clunky grammar in places.

Publisher: Indie

Length: 72 pages

Final Grade: B-

STAKING HIS CLAIM by Lynda Chance

April 25, 2012 in alpha male, B Reviews, bi-racial heroine, Book Reviews, Hispanic, Hispanic hero, Novella, rancher, self-published, sensual, steamy, white woman latin man, wwlm

Description: When alpha male rancher, Raul Vega, meets innocent nursing student, Elaina Ruiz, he works hard to resist her, believing she’s too young for him. Elaina finds Raul too intense and doesn’t disabuse him of the notion, even though she’s old enough for what he has in mind. But how long can they deny their attraction?

The GoodChance’s writing has a lot of energy, which is harder to achieve than one might think. You won’t get bored, and you’ll keep on turning the pages. Also, this novella is a bargain at $0.99.

The Bad:

The Hero (Hispanic): It’s a thin line between aggressive would-be lover and judgmental bully with Raul, and if you’re sensitive to that line in alpha males, you might have trouble fully enjoying this story.

The Heroine (white and Hispanic): When dealing with alpha males, the characterization of the heroine has to be even more on point, so that it doesn’t feel like she’s being completely overshadowed by a stronger personality. In this case, Elaina needs considerable character work, as her motivation is unclear and often shaky. She doesn’t know what she wants from life or love, which happens all the time in real life, but in book life it’s hard to give a character these traits without her coming across as wishy-washy and childish as opposed to truly conflicted.

Craft: Contradiction issues. Ex. Elaina was stunned at his agreement and didn’t even think to question his sincerity. He was sincere. She would bet on it. “Are you serious?” [she asked]. Basically, the character is saying she doesn’t question the hero’s sincerity before turning around and questioning his sincerity. There are a few contradictory turns like that.

The Naughty: Sensual>Steamy. Virgin.

Editing issues: Minor. 2 typos found.

Publisher: Indie

Length: 91 pages (Amazon estimate)

Final Grade: C+

THE CONTRACT by Zena Wynn

April 9, 2012 in B Reviews, erotic, married couple, Novella, Phaze Books, scifi, white woman latin man, wwlm

Description: Cecily marries Billy, but is forced by his company to also take Billy’s brother Renardo as a husband and lover after Renardo’s wife dies. Drama.

The Good: Ms. Wynn takes a complex situation and makes it surprisingly simple and extremely hot. The reader feels for her main character, who really put in a tug-of-war situation. Though the drama is plentiful it also feels organic and earned. Also, I loved that the main characters are working class. And Ms. Wynn’s world building is so seamless, I kept forgetting that this was technically a sci-fi romance. She never let the world building overshadow the story.

The Bad: The emotional arc is well-plotted and earned, but it doesn’t necessarily feel like the sexual arc is fully resolved. Also, the cover is somewhat baffling. Not sure what, if anything, it has to do with the actual story.

The Naughty: Erotic. Multiple partners.

Editing issues: 3 typos. Dialogue weirdly formatted on Kindle app.

Publisher: Phaze Books

Length: 47 pages

Final Grade: B+

WOLF IN WAITING by Shyla Colt

March 28, 2012 in alpha male, black woman white man, Book Reviews, Breathless Press, bwwm, bwwm romance, C Reviews, erotic, Novella, paranormal, shifter(s), suspense, werewolf

Description: Years ago Kalyx and Luz were best friends in love, bonded over their mutual inability to shape shift. But when Luz shifts, Kalyx runs away, feeling their love can’t transcend their pack caste. Now she’s back for her sister’s wedding. Can Luz, who never stopped loving her, convince her that they belong together?

The Good: This is a hot and compelling story. I love tortured alphas, and Luz is that.

The Bad: There’s too much story stuffed into too small of a word count. And though, Ms. Colt has excellent plot points, she doesn’t take the time to really explore any of them, not even the H/H’s intriguing back story. This was a good story diminished by lack of good craft. Everything feels rushed and nothing is truly fleshed out.

The Naughty: Erotic. Masturbation.

Editing issues: One typo found. Clumsy grammar and word choice in places.

Publisher: Breathless Press

Length: Novella (12, 127 words)

Final Grade: C+

DEEPER, LOUDER, HARDER by Jorja Tabu

March 21, 2012 in A Reviews, B Reviews, BDSM, black woman asian man, black woman white man, boss, business man, bwam, bwwm, bwwm romance, celebrity, erotic, Novella, office romance, self-published, steamy

LOUDER by Jorja Tabu is free over at Amazon until this Friday, so I figured now would be a great time to delve into her novella set, DEEPER LOUDER HARDER, which includes her first three IR stories.

Description:

DEEPER – Prim and proper librarian, Charlotte Goodtree, finds herself loosening up in all the right ways when a handsome contractor enters her life. But will his explosive secret destroy their budding relationship?

LOUDER – Up and coming rapper, Ghost Diva (Gabby to her friends), receives the break of a lifetime when she lands the opening spot on tour for multi-platinum rapper, Echo. And, to her surprise, their chemistry burns even hotter off-stage.

HARDER – Black secretary, Lisa Tyrell, is just about to quit on her domineering half-Japanese boss, Mr. Yamamoto, when he confesses that he’s not just domineering, but a conflicted Dom. Can she help him navigate his emotions without losing her heart.

The Good:

DEEPER – Ms. Tabu excels at nailing the awkwardness of getting to know the person to which one is sexually attracted. Her characters in all three books have considerable — but understandable and realistic self-esteem issues, stemming from class, racial differences, and internal conflict. The couple in DEEPER are super-sweet and the sex is AH-MAZING, with really clever set-ups. Also, Charlotte’s sister, Mandy, is a hoot, who really does need her own story.

LOUDER – I’m not a fan of lyrics in books, but Ms. Tabu nails the ones she gives to her characters. I love that her H/H are terrifically conflicted within themselves and with each other, as two people in their separate situations would be. She sets up great situations for them, and builds sexual tension that you could cut with a knife. I found this story to be just ridiculously romantic and the characters really stayed with me.

HARDER – Ms. Tabu has put this book in the exact right order, because each novella just kept getting better and better, and HARDER was my favorite of the three. This is just a really smart romance. Ms. Tabu is very concerned with her characters’ emotions, which makes them feel like living, breathing people, and the situations she sets up for this H/H just blew my mind. At one point, I found myself nodding and saying, “Respect, respect” out loud. Also, her dialogue in all three novellas is crazy-solid. This novella, in particular, is really funny and really different.

The Bad: I don’t think I’ve ever encountered a romance author who ends her stories so abruptly. I can understand not having an epilogue. But writing-wise, it feels like the author has a very short attention-span, and just decides she’s done with the story at a certain word-count mark — even if the story isn’t quite done. Reading this novella collection, felt like eating a plate of slightly undercooked cookies. I mean, cookies are yummy, no matter what, but I wish she had left them in the oven just a beat or two longer.

DEEPER – Because the H/H meet and fall in lust within the first few pages, the author fails to establish the heroine’s character before unraveling it. We’re told she’s an uptight good girl while watching her do wild bad girl things.

LOUDER – The hero has a daughter who’s mentioned often, but whom we never get to meet.

HARDER – The cover for the individual novella is not great, and even misleading at first glance. I didn’t realize that the cover model was wearing a stocking, and thought that I’d be reading an IR romance, involving a white woman and her PoC boss.

Though I loved the heroine’s POV, the hero was so compelling that it felt weird that he didn’t get one of his own — especially since the heroes of DEEPER and LOUDER got their own POVs. Of all the stories, this one gives you the most “kicked out” feeling. Luckily it’s given a sequel in HARDEST, which feels more like the ending this novella should have had.

The Naughty: Erotic. Serious breast play. (DEEPER) Steamy>Erotic. Sex on couch. (LOUDER) Erotic. D/s. Lingerie. Heightened sexual tension. (HARDER)

Editing issues: 12 typos found in set. DEEPER has a weird indent situation. In all three novellas, the author uses “taunt,” when she means “taut.”

Publisher: Indie author

Length: 60,000 words

Final Grade:

DEEPER – B+

LOUDER – A

HARDER – A

WYNTER’S PROTECTION by Tressie Lockwood

March 9, 2012 in B Reviews, Book Reviews, bwwm, bwwm romance, erotic, Novella, Sugar and Spice Press, suspense

Description: When Assistant DA, Wynter King, finds herself being hunted down by a mob boss, she turns to her ex-fiance, Crowe Hanson. But can she take shelter with him without losing her heart to him all over again?

The Good: This novella is well-plotted, and I love that the heroine is a strong woman with career ambitions. It was a very satisfying and complete read. I didn’t even remember that it was technically a novella until I sat down to write this review.

The Bad: Though the narrative was tight, other craft points weren’t quite there yet. The story as a whole suffered from stilted dialogue and clumsily-written action, which at times made it hard to understand what was happening during the higher-octane scenes.

The Naughty: Erotic.

Editing issues: 2 typos found.

Publisher: Sugar and Spice Press

Length: Novella

Final Grade: B-

LIASON (Soul Bond Book One) by Ambrielle Kirk

March 7, 2012 in bi-racial heroine, Book Reviews, Breathless Press, erotic, Novella, paranormal

Description: When a young witch coven queen accidentally summons a half-demon prince in order to get back a powerful spell book, unexpected passion erupts.

The Good: Ms. Kirk has a considerable facility for situation and world-building. Also, I really appreciate that this novella was “different” — not your run-of-the-mill paranormal. I think if she keeps attending to her craft, she could really become something special, and I will certainly give her future works a look.

The Bad: As much as I wanted to love this story, it suffers from poor execution. The set-ups — especially the ones concerning the magical book — aren’t clear. Battle promises aren’t paid off. Twists come out of the blue, and more attention is given to setting up the next book in the series than to fully resolving the current one. Also, I was never quite clear on the heroine’s race. From a few of the clues given, I decided that she was perhaps biracial, but I wasn’t sure, and this made it hard to form a clear picture of her.

The Naughty: Erotic. Non-human.

Editing issues: 3 typos found.

Publisher: Breathless Press

Length: 67 pages (Amazon estimated length)

Final Grade: C

THE SHADOW BOX by Alexis Ke

January 17, 2012 in Book Reviews, bwwm, co-workers, erotic, Novella, office romance, Red Sage Publishing

Description: Best friends Simon and Afryca are in lust with each other from afar, but each is too afraid to tell the other how they really feel. Can one naughty club finally bring them together?

The Good: This is a very good premise, and I liked that the H/H were regular folk. There were also some funny moments with the heroine. And I loved her best friend.

The Bad: The plot is largely propelled along through interior monologue as opposed to sex or actions. This means that we spend an inordinate amount of time listening to the main characters go back and forth with themselves in their heads. It also means that nearly all the conflict is either internal or rooted in misunderstanding. If there was a bad assumption to be made or a wrong conclusion to draw, these characters were all over it. Also, I was very confused by Simon’s side hustle. At one point it’s said that he’s not really having sex with the woman he puts on a show with nightly, but then women are able to book his services — wasn’t quite sure what was going on there.

The Naughty: Erotic. Two sex scenes. Anal.

Editing issues: Several. I counted eleven typos.

Publisher: Red Sage Publishing

Length: Novella

Final Grade: C-

BEG FOR IT by Minx Malone

January 9, 2012 in A Reviews, Book Reviews, bwwm, bwwm romance, co-workers, Ellora's Cave, erotic, Novella, office romance

Description: Best friends and ad execs, Mya and Milo, are fierce competitors in the boardroom, but they’re both nursing secret crushes on each other. Can they change their status from friends to lovers without losing their hearts?

The Good: This was a blazing hot, sweet, and funny read. Mya and Milo have serious chemistry between the sheets and in the office. I liked that they were at equal levels in their careers and that their jobs figured so heavily into their love story. I also liked that their lack of communication was fear-based as opposed to convenient-plot-based. And there was a great speech at the end that reminded me that a hot story can be romantic and touching as well. This was a tightly-plotted, well-structured read with excellent dialogue, fun situations, and really likeable characters. Definitely worth the $1.49.

The Bad: Giving your H/H names that start with the same letter is always risky. Giving them names that start with same sound? — don’t do that.

The Naughty: Erotic. Explicit language. Back-to-back sex scenes. Sex with food.

Editing issues: None

Publisher: Ellora’s Cave

Length: Novella

Final Grade: A
